Though no one can dispute the cosiness and character of this pub. with its many rooms, fires in winter and excellent range of beers, we hit a bad day for a lunch, costing us £45. 00 for 3 of us to have only one course and 3 bottles of soft drink. 2 of us had Beef Bourguinon with chips( these were good) and one of us had the Cornish fish pie. The beef was served in a thin liquid, not a sauce, which tasted like a marinade as it had a vinegary taste. There were no accompanying veg for the beef dish. The fish pie was undersized for the cost of it, the pastry appeared reheated, the cauliflower was hard, tasteless. and the carrot slices you could count on one hand. We left without complaining as this was a treat for one of our party and we did not want to further spoil the day. Was it the chef's day off?
